Tamarillo wins the Melbourne Racing Club UAE Oaks for Durcan   Print  E-mail
Tamarillo gained a thoroughly deserved victory in the $250,000 Melbourne Racing Club UAE Oaks at Nad Al Sheba yesterday. Thus leading UAE trainer Mazin Al Kurdi gained his fifth big-race success of the inaugural Dubai International Racing Carnival.

The three-year-old by former World Series Champion Daylami, who was given a good ride by Ted Durcan, struck back after being headed by Festive Style, to win by one and a half lengths.

Newmarket trained Menhoubah, ridden by Frankie Dettori, was eight and a quarter lengths back in third. Al Kurdi, who has scored 12 Carnival victories, said that the winner would now take on the colts in the $2 million UAE Derby on Dubai World Cup night.

'She deserves to be given a chance in the UAE Derby,' said the trainer. 'But we'll still have to wait and see how se comes out of the race and we will have to see what her owner Sheikh Rashid has to say.'

Tamarillo's victory was due reward for Al Kurdi's enterprise in producing the filly superbly fit for yesterday's race.

Frankie Dettori, who has won the three previous runnings of the Oaks for Godolphin on Laoub, Imperial Gesture and Danuta, partnered the Clive Brittain-trained Menhoubah as his retaining stable were without a runner.

Earlier in the evening Godolphin's Gonfilia, redeemed her reputation when making all to win the $130,000 Darley Balanchine Stakes, the second and final leg of the inaugural Darley Distaff Series.

A well-beaten eighth behind Festive Style in the first leg, the Cape Verdi Stakes three weeks ago, the German-bred filly turned what appeared to be the day's most competitive race into a procession as she burst clear at the two furlong mark and soon had her army of supporters in full voice.

Desert Glow, ridden by Australia's Kerrin McEvoy for former UAE champion trainer Satish Seemar, was six lengths back in second with South African raider Special Parade half a length back in third.

The winner of the Darley Distaff Series earns a nomination to Darley stallion Halling and though Gonfilia would have been the recipient, General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence, gave it to Festive Style.

Saeed bin Suroor, who trains Gonfilia, commented: 'She didn't run to form last time out. She prefers to go to the front and dictate the pace. She enjoys herself being out in the front and that's what made the difference today.'

Feet So Fast provided Seemar with his fourth Carnival success, sprinting to victory in the $150,000 Emirates Airline Cup over 1,300 metres on turf.

The Pivotal gelding was disqualified from first place in his last start when jockey Ted Durcan weighed in light.

But Seemar had the perfect tonic yesterday when the five-year-old outclassed an international field to win by two and a quarter lengths from English hope Boston Lodge (Eddie Ahern), with South Africa's Magic Master taking third place under Irish champion jockey Mick Kinane in a fast run race.
