Australian superstar Lonhro could compete in Dubai   Print  E-mail

Lonhro, the Australian sensation who notched his ninth Group 1 win in the C. F. Orr Stakes (Aus-G1) on February 7 at Caulfield, could be shipped to Dubai in late March after his connections received an invitation for him to compete in either the $2-million Dubai Duty Free (UAE-G1) on turf or the $6-million Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) on dirt.

Lonhro has made all 31 career starts on turf, and the six-year-old son of Octagonal has won 23 races, including 22 stakes of which all but one have been group events, and earned $2,711,171.

"I’ve got to weigh a lot of things up and speak to [owner and breeder] Bob [Ingham] before deciding what we do," Lonhro’s trainer, John Hawkes, told the Sydney Morning Herald. "We will think about it over the next week or so. [Dubai is] an option."

Hawkes said that Lonhro would make his next start in the St. George Stakes (Aus-G2) on Saturday at Caulfield before going to Flemington on March 8 for the Australian Cup (Aus-G1). If he goes to Dubai, then a start there would be next on March 27 before Lonhro’s scheduled career-ending race in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Aus-G1) in April.

"I haven’t really gone past the Australian Cup at this stage," Hawkes said. "But with the right opportunity, the right horse and if everything falls into place at the right time… you never know [about Dubai]."

Lonhro could be sent to Dubai on March 16 with Exceed and Excel, a Group 1-winning sprinter trained by Tim Martin who was invited for the $2-million Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1) last September after back-to-back wins in the Roman Consul Stakes (AUS-G3) and Dubai Racing Club Cup (UAE-G1).

(Aus-G2) at Randwick. The son of Danehill is slated to contest the Newmarket Handicap (Aus-G1) on March 6 at Flemington before being sent to Dubai. Exceed and Excel has won six of ten career starts, including five stakes. The Golden Shaheen would be his first start on dirt.
